Wajiha Rehman is a postgraduate researcher(PGR) in the School of Mathematics at the University of Leeds. She is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) for the European Union European Industrial Doctorate (EID) program; Eagre/Aegir: High-seas wave-impact modelling. As an ESR, Wajiha is developing a numerical model to perform the wave-structure interaction analysis of water waves and dynamic offshore wind-turbine mast using (dis)continuous Galerkin’s Finite Element Method. The first 18 months of the research project will be at the University of Leeds; and the second 18 months will at Maritime Research Institute (MARIN) Academy BV, The Netherlands. The mathematical model and codes will be developed at the University of Leeds while the validation through experimental testing of the model will be done

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Maritime Research Institute Netherlands MARIN is a world-leading institute for hydrodynamic research and maritime technology (video). The overall objective of the Eagre project is to create and deliver computational/mathematical modelling tools for solving problems in maritime engineering, based on advanced mathematical/numerical analysis and efficient implementation and testing in a general finite-element simulation environment offered by Firedrake (Imperial College with Leeds). Our key task is to offer training/ research such that a so-called "numerical wavetank" is established by two Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) for use in maritime-engineering wave basins, such as operational for consulting at the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN Academy). Our research will provide the ESRs with a skill set that is highly attractive in the job market to employers engaged in high-end consulting.

The integrated objectives are to create:

  • a numerical wavetank “ExtremeWaves” (ESR1) concerning modelling of extreme or rogue waves in wave basins integrated with
  • a numerical wavetank “WaveTurbineImpact” (ERS2) concerning wave-structure interactions, especially wave-impact, on a dynamic wind-turbine mast.

The overall objectives build on our recent and current collaborative work (between U. of Leeds and MARIN Academy) on the modelling of water waves and wave-structure interactions with (dis)continuous Galerkin finite-element methods. The above objectives offer challenging demands, not least because the prediction of wave motion around moving or flexible structures is a difficult computational task as a result of the requirement to track (generally using a sophisticated approximation) the a-priori-unknown nonlinear air-water and water-structure interfaces (and their cross-section, the waterline). Conquering these demands is timely because numerical simulations are cheaper than laboratory tests. Moreover, because in realistically motivated challenges mathematical modelling, laboratory testing and cross-validation via computational simulation are inextricably entwined, we view them all as essential components in our so-called "Research Trinity".

ResCompLeedsCon2022

Wajiha Rehman attended ResCompLeedsCon2022 from 26th to 27th July 2022 to deliver a presentation on the topic: " The variational and numerical modelling of water waves generated by numerical wave-tank". Through this presentation, she explained the mathematical and numerical models based on shallow water equations and potential flow model to develop the numerical wavetank with piston and waveflap wave-makers. These numerical wavetanks can be used by the martime industry to study water waves and to design novel maritime structures by studying the interactions of water waves on the structure. International Conference on Ocean, Offshore & Arctic Engineering 2023

Wajiha Rehman presented two research articles at the 42nd International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OMAE2023) organised by ASME in Melbourne, Australia. The first article is "A Systematic Approach for Developing A Numerical Wavetank to Simulate Driven Shallow- and Deep-Water Waves", which describes the mathematical and numerical models of the wavetanks driven by piston and waveflap wavemakers to simulate shallow and deep water dynamics, respectively. The second article is, "Experimental Modeling of Water-Wave Interactions with a Flexible Beam", which is about an experimental campaign carried out at MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands), the Netherlands, to study a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem. The experimental data are publically available at the GitHub repository and can be used to validate numerical tools for the FSI simulations. These papers are a result of a joint effort by Wajiha and her supervisors Prof Onno Bokhove, Prof. Mark Kelmanson and Dr Tim Bunnik. We are grateful to the European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Fellowship for funding this project.

OUTREACH ACTIVITY

Outreach Event 1: Differential Equations in Real Life

Wajiha Rehman (WR) took part as a speaker in an international conference held in Pakistan," WUM - One day international webinar on challenges, innovation and opportunities in mathematics ", organised by, in which scientists with mathematical backgrounds delivered talks and shared their research with undergraduate-level female students of the university. The topic of WR's talk was Differential Equations in Real Life , in which was explained the process of mathematical modelling of physical systems, i.e., water waves and fluid-structure interactions between water waves and a hyperelastic beam. The purpose of the talk was to inspire female students in Pakistan to choose mathematics as their future career. Outreach Event 2: Meet a scientist

WR joined the ''Science Fuse Fellowship Programme'' organised by Science Fuse to promote science among the local students in Pakistan. As a part of this fellowship, WR took part in an interview, in a so-called "Meet a scientist" program, in which WR explained her research-project work to a non-mathematical audience at high-school level. The interview was delivered in Urdu with the remit of inspiring the youth of Pakistan to pursue future careers in engineering and numerical modelling. Outreach Event 3: Exhibition in MathsCity

Both ESRs, Wajiha Rehman and Yang Lu visited MathsCity, Trinity shopping centre, Leeds, to carry out the outreach activities. Through the exhibition, the concept of clean energy production by using offshore wind turbines was introduced to a group of home-schooled children and their parents. The outreach activity consisted of three sections. At first, we delivered a brief presentation to explain the global environmental crises and the contribution of this project towards green energy production, after that experimental demonstrations by using a scaled wave tank with a paper windmill fixed at one end and a plastic model of the wind turbine were given, and in the end, some hands-on fun activities for children to make their paper windmills from the provided material. The exhibition was a success as it instigated curiosity among the kids, which was clear from their questions and comments.

Outreach Event 4: Talk delivered for the Royal Institution Maths Masterclass

On February 26th 2022, Both ESRs Wajiha Rehman and Yang Lu jointly delivered a talk to year 9 students at a ``Secondary Mathematics Masterclass" organised by The Royal Institution in the MALL of School of Mathematics, the University of Leeds. The topic of the talk was " Maths for Green Power: Windmills in Sea Waves ". The talk was divided into four sections. The first session was dedicated to the explanation of the research problem i.e. role of mathematics in the modelling of real life physics and designing of technologies to exploit renewable energy resources. In the second session, the three pillars of carrying research also known as " Research Trinity ", theoretical, numerical and experimental, was explained by giving the example of standing waves. During the third sesssion, both ESRs explained their research to the students and also shared the results produced by running the numerical simulations. In the final session, students shared their views on the advantages and disadvantages of each research method and the talk was concluded with a hand-on-activity in which students build paper windmills models.
